Vietnam Cycling Tours: The Complete Guide to Exploring Vietnam by Bike

By Minh Ha, Founder of AnyTrails

My Journey Across Vietnam by Bicycle

I grew up in a small town in northern Vietnam. When I was 20 years old, I moved to Hanoi to attend university and, like many students at the time, I traveled everywhere by bicycle.

One day, while riding to class through the busy streets of Hanoi, a simple thought appeared in my mind:

"What if I cycled all the way from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City?"

That idea became a dream.

For years, life got in the way. I graduated, started working, built a career, and have a family. But the dream never disappeared.

Then, when I turned 40, I realized that if I didn't do it now, I might never do it at all.

So in the summer of 2015, I loaded my bicycle and set off on the journey I had imagined for two decades.

I started in Móng Cái, Vietnam's northeastern border town near China, and rode all the way to Mũi Cà Mau, the southernmost tip of the country.

Over the following weeks, I crossed mountains, river deltas, fishing villages, historic towns, tropical forests, and bustling cities. I met people from every corner of Vietnam and discovered roads, cultures, and landscapes that most visitors never experience.

That journey confirmed something I still believe today:

Vietnam is one of the greatest cycling destinations in the world.

If you'd like to follow my journey, you can read my story Cycling Across Vietnam: From Móng Cái to Mũi Cà Mau, including day-by-day ride reports and photos from the adventure.

After more than 20 years designing and operating cycling adventures throughout Vietnam and Southeast Asia, I continue to believe that Vietnam offers one of the most diverse and rewarding cycling experiences anywhere in the world.

Whether you're looking for gentle countryside rides, challenging mountain climbs, cultural immersion, or a cross-country adventure, Vietnam has something for every cyclist.

Why Vietnam Is One of the Best Cycling Destinations in the World

Few countries offer the diversity that Vietnam does.

Stretching over 3200 kilometers of the coatal line from north to south, Vietnam features an extraordinary range of landscapes and cultures. In a single trip, cyclists can experience coastal roads, lush river deltas, mountain passes, tropical forests, traditional villages, and vibrant cities.

One of the things I love most about cycling in Vietnam is that every day feels different.

Northern Vietnam and you'll encounter some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in Southeast Asia, including Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Sapa.

Head to Central Vietnam and you'll find rolling hills, scenic coastal roads, and historic towns such as Hoi An and Hue.

Ride through the Mekong Delta and you'll discover a network of flat roads winding through coconut groves, fruit orchards, and riverside communities.

The scenery changes constantly. The food changes. The local dialects change. Even the architecture and customs vary from region to region.

As a cyclist, that variety makes every day on the bike an adventure.

Best Cycling Regions in Vietnam

People often ask me which region is my favorite.

The truth is that every part of Vietnam has its own beauty and character. However, if I had to choose one region, it would be the far north, particularly Ha Giang and Cao Bang.

These mountainous provinces offer some of the most breathtaking cycling routes I have ever experienced.

Towering limestone peaks rise above deep valleys. Remote ethnic minority villages cling to mountainsides. Winding roads follow dramatic ridgelines with views that seem to stretch forever.

Ha Giang is not necessarily for every cyclist. The climbs can be challenging and the terrain demanding. But for those who enjoy mountain riding, the rewards are extraordinary.

Many cyclists tell me that the first time they ride through Ha Giang, they struggle to concentrate on the road because they cannot stop looking at the scenery.

The Best Time to Cycle in Vietnam

Because Vietnam stretches across multiple climate zones, the ideal cycling season depends on the region.

Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Giang, Sapa, Cao Bang)

The best time to cycle is from October through April.

Temperatures are generally cooler and rainfall is lower, creating excellent riding conditions.

Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat)

The best season is typically from late November through May.

The region experiences its heaviest rainfall between September and November.

Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc)

The most comfortable cycling conditions are generally from October through April.

The rainy season typically runs from May through September, although showers are often short and followed by sunshine.

What Makes Vietnam Different from Europe?

Having worked with international cyclists for many years, I often hear comparisons between Vietnam and other cycling destinations.

What makes Vietnam unique is its incredible diversity.

In Europe, cyclists often travel through landscapes that remain relatively consistent over long distances. In Vietnam, the experience can change dramatically within a single day.

You can ride from bustling cities to quiet villages. From coastal roads to mountain passes. From rice terraces to tropical forests.

Vietnam also offers a remarkable combination of challenge and accessibility.

Strong riders can tackle major mountain climbs with over 2,000 meters of elevation gain. Recreational cyclists can enjoy relaxed rides through flat countryside and rural villages.

Another advantage is that Vietnam remains wonderfully green throughout much of the year. Thanks to its tropical climate, cyclists are surrounded by vibrant landscapes, rice paddies, forests, rivers, and agricultural land.

How Far Do Cyclists Typically Ride Each Day?

There is no single answer because every cyclist is different.

Many recreational riders enjoy distances between 30 and 60 kilometers per day.

More experienced cyclists often ride 60 to 100 kilometers daily.

Strong amateur and professional riders frequently seek routes exceeding 100 kilometers with significant climbing.

One reason Vietnam appeals to such a wide range of cyclists is the variety of available routes. Whether you prefer leisurely rides or challenging endurance days, there are suitable options throughout the country.

Road Conditions in Vietnam

Road conditions in Vietnam have improved dramatically over the past decade.

Today, the vast majority of roads used by cyclists are paved and in good condition. Major highways, secondary roads, and many rural roads have benefited from significant infrastructure investment.

For gravel cycling enthusiasts, Vietnam also offers growing opportunities. Mountain regions, farming areas, and remote villages provide interesting gravel and mixed-surface routes for riders seeking adventure beyond the main roads.

Food and Accommodation

One of the greatest pleasures of cycling in Vietnam is the food.

Vietnamese cuisine is famous worldwide, and cyclists quickly discover that excellent meals can be found almost everywhere, including remote villages.

A simple local meal may cost as little as $3–5 USD, while larger cities offer everything from traditional street food to fine dining experiences.

Accommodation options are equally diverse.

Cyclists can stay in family-run guesthouses, charming boutique hotels, eco-lodges, luxury resorts, and international five-star properties depending on their preferences and budget.

Guided vs. Self-Guided Cycling Tours

Both approaches have advantages.

Self-Guided Tours

Self-guided tours offer flexibility, independence, and lower costs. Riders can travel at their own pace and adjust plans as they go.

Guided Tours

Guided tours provide deeper cultural insights, local knowledge, logistical support, and peace of mind.

Experienced local guides often introduce guests to places they would never discover on their own, from hidden village roads to family-run restaurants and cultural experiences that are not found in guidebooks.

For many international visitors, the combination of local expertise and support significantly enhances the overall experience.

How Much Does a Vietnam Cycling Tour Cost?

Tour Style Typical Cost
Self-guided $50–100/day
Guided Group $150–300/day
Premium Small Group $250–450/day
Luxury Active Travel $400–800/day

Best Cycling Routes in Vietnam

Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop is widely regarded as Vietnam's most spectacular cycling route and one of the finest mountain rides in Southeast Asia. Located in Vietnam's far north near the Chinese border, this route winds through dramatic limestone mountains, deep valleys, and remote ethnic minority villages. Cyclists are rewarded with breathtaking views at every turn, particularly along the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass overlooking the Nho Que River. The terrain is challenging, with long climbs and technical descents, making it ideal for experienced riders seeking adventure. However, the combination of stunning scenery, authentic local culture, and quiet mountain roads makes every effort worthwhile. For many cyclists, completing the Ha Giang Loop is the highlight of their journey through Vietnam.

Cao Bang Geopark

Home to the UNESCO-recognized Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, Cao Bang offers some of Vietnam's most scenic and least-traveled cycling routes. The region is known for its towering limestone karsts, crystal-clear rivers, and traditional Tay and Nung villages. Cyclists can explore winding country roads leading to natural wonders such as Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Asia. Compared to Ha Giang, Cao Bang has gentler terrain and less traffic, making it an excellent choice for riders who want a balance of beautiful scenery and cultural immersion. The combination of geological wonders, rural landscapes, and warm local hospitality makes Cao Bang one of Vietnam's hidden cycling gems.

Hanoi to Hoi An

The route from Hanoi to Hoi An is one of Vietnam's most rewarding long-distance cycling adventures. Covering approximately 800 kilometers, it showcases the incredible diversity of the country. Riders begin in the historic capital of Hanoi before cycling through rural villages, coastal roads, and historic cities such as Hue. Along the way, cyclists experience changing landscapes, regional cuisines, and local cultures. The route includes both flat sections and challenging climbs, making it suitable for riders seeking a true cross-country experience. The journey concludes in Hoi An, one of Vietnam's most charming destinations, known for its lantern-lit streets, ancient architecture, and vibrant culinary scene.

Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta offers a completely different cycling experience from the mountains of northern Vietnam. Known as Vietnam's "rice bowl," this vast network of rivers, canals, and fertile farmland is ideal for relaxed cycling. The terrain is almost entirely flat, making it accessible to riders of all fitness levels. Quiet backroads connect colorful markets, fruit orchards, coconut groves, and riverside communities where life moves at a slower pace. Cycling here is less about conquering climbs and more about connecting with local culture. Visitors can stop at family-run workshops, enjoy fresh tropical fruits, and observe daily life along the waterways. It is one of the most immersive cycling experiences in Vietnam.

Hai Van Pass

Often described as one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world, Hai Van Pass is a must-ride for cyclists visiting Central Vietnam. The pass connects Da Nang and Hue, climbing through lush mountains before descending toward the South China Sea. Although only around 21 kilometers long, the route delivers unforgettable panoramic views of the coastline, beaches, and surrounding mountains. The climb is challenging but manageable for most cyclists with moderate fitness. Reaching the summit is a rewarding experience, with spectacular photo opportunities and refreshing mountain air. Whether ridden as part of a longer Hanoi-to-Hoi An journey or as a standalone challenge, Hai Van Pass is a classic highlight of cycling in Vietnam.

Learning from 20 Years with Backroads

Before founding AnyTrails, I spent nearly two decades working with Backroads, one of the world's leading active travel companies.

That experience taught me that exceptional cycling tours are about much more than distance and elevation.

Travelers remember the people they meet, the stories they hear, the meals they share, and the unexpected moments that happen along the way.

Today, those lessons continue to influence how we design every AnyTrails experience.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Travel

We believe tourism should benefit local communities.

One example is our work in Binh Lieu, a remote region of northern Vietnam with incredible hiking and cycling opportunities. We have supported local families in developing homestay businesses and helped create new economic opportunities through tourism.

By bringing travelers to lesser-known destinations and working directly with local communities, we aim to create positive and lasting impacts.
